“Fall Is Almost Here! What Should I Look Out For?”

It is about to be fall, what should I be looking out for with my dog?

Common Concerns:

Seasonal Allergens: Just like people, dogs can have seasonal allergies as well. Some well known allergens are mold, ragweed, and dust. Some symptoms include itchiness, watery eyes, sneezing, and even a rash or hair loss.

Fleas And Ticks: You can also re-read our flea and tick prevention blog which I will include a link to blow. With the weather becoming cooler and damper they are becoming more of a problem. Especially when there are leaves falling, ticks like to hide under or may even be on the leaf falling down and can jump onto your pet.

Flea and Tick Prevention!

Seasonal Canine Illness (SCI): This is a lesser-known condition that affects some dogs after they’ve been walked in wooded areas. Watch for symptoms like lethargy, whining, and difficulty breathing within a few days of a hike. SCI can be fatal if not treated promptly by a vet. The cause of SCI is unknown and is thought to be linked to something in the wooded areas. Keep your dog hydrated and try your best to avoid areas where SCI is known to have effected other dogs.

Toxins and Hazards:

Toxic Plans And Mushrooms: Be cautious of acorns, mushrooms, mums, Autumn crocus, and fruit trees such as apple, cherry, and plum.

Moldy Mulch: Check fertilizers and mulch for mold as this can cause allergies and other health problems for your dog!

Corn Cobs: Dogs CAN NOT digest corn cobs! It WILL cause intestinal blockage!

Rat And Mouse Poison: This is extremely toxic for pets! Use extreme caution when using these products.

Halloween Candy: Keep all Halloween candy, particularly that containing xylitol (a sugar substitute), away from your dog, as it can be toxic.

Antifreeze: This highly toxic substance can leak from cars, so keep your dog away from any spills, especially during colder weather.

Safety And Awareness:

Evening Walks: With shorter days, you may be walking your dog in the dark more often, so ensure you have proper reflective gear to keep both of you visible.

Cleanliness: Keep your home clean to help with indoor allergens like dust.

Veterinary care: Consult your vet for advice on managing your pets allergies and any ither health concerns you may have in the upcoming months of the season.
